Eye Laser Surgery: Understanding Your Options

Eye surgery used to be a painful procedure with long recovery times -- but modern surgical techniques have made most eye surgeries relatively quick and easy. Perhaps the most revolutionary advance of all has been the adoption of surgical lasers to perform these surgeries with pinpoint accuracy, which allows for the best possible results and amazingly fast recovery of optimal vision. Here at Ginter Eyecare Center in Lubbock, TX, our optometry team can educate you on the various techniques used to treat eye conditions, guiding you toward informed decisions while offering a high standard of pre-operative and post-operative care.Woman getting laser surgery in Lubbock, TX

A surgical laser has many advantages over the traditional scalpel. In cataract removal surgery, for instance, the laser's extreme accuracy allows it to work less invasively, causing less inflammation. It also helps to break up the diseased lens for removal; this means that the surgeon can rely less on the traditional ultrasound tool, which can damage healthy tissue if used to excess. The laser is capable of sealing off blood vessels even as it makes incisions, which causes minimal bleeding and promotes a swifter recovery.

Eye laser surgery is the state of the art of many different kinds of procedures, including:

  • Cataract removal - As mentioned above, eye laser surgery can make cataract removal easier and more accurate than ever. The beam creates a tiny incision in the "capsule" that holds the lens, then help break up the lens for easy removal. A new, artificial intraocular lens is then inserted into the capsule.
  • YAG laser posterior capsulotomy - This eye laser surgery is performed if the eye clouds up again following cataract removal. The laser removes the cloudy material quickly and easily so you can enjoy the full benefits of your new lens.
  • LASIK - LASIK is a laser-assisted method for reshaping the cornea to correct refractive errors such as nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism. Corneal topography and wavefront technology measure the precise contours of the cornea. This enables the laser to create a tiny flap in the corneal tissue to make the cornea flatter or steeper as needed.
  • PRK- PRK is another form of eye laser surgery that is often recommended for people whose corneal tissue isn't strong enough to tolerate a flap. Instead, it ablates a thin outer layer of corneal tissue to achieve the same result.
